Some of the key concepts in FriendFeed are:

Feeds are atom/rss feeds that a user subscribes to in FriendFeed

Friends are people whose feeds you have subscribed to

Entries are items that you have posted to FriendFeed.

Comments are notes that have been entered about an entry

Links are links to entries

Likes are ways to vote for entries

Groups are feeds with multiple contributors.

What is FriendFeed? FriendFeed is a service that makes it easy to share with friends online. It offers a fun and interactive way to discover and discuss information among friends.

You get a customized feed made up of the content that your friends shared—from photos to interesting links and videos to messages just for you. And your friends get their customized feeds, full of the cool stuff that you've shared.

What are groups?

A group is just another feed, but multiple people can contribute to its contents. Think of it as a mini FriendFeed for a particular subject or group of people. Everyone in the group can share stuff with each other and leave comments that others in the group can see.

Your FriendFeed subscriptions include the Groups you're a part of. There's no limit to the number of groups you can join or create. As a group owner, you can manage the group's settings and membership, and invite new people to your group, even if they're not FriendFeed users yet. And when you use the FriendFeed bookmarklet, to share anything from the web, you can also specify whether to share it on your feed, or just to a particular group.

When creating a new group, you can choose between having a private group, a public group, or a "standard feed", which is just like other public feeds in FriendFeed, except they can have multiple authors.

I just signed up. What do I do now?

Welcome! FriendFeed is all about sharing, so you should check out if your friends are already sharing things on FriendFeed. It's easy to find and subscribe to your friends (and we even offer some recommended ones).

Once you're subscribed to someone, you'll see their updates and shared items. As you take a look at their items, click "Like" if you like something. If you find an interesting conversation, click "Comment" and leave your thoughts.

As you subscribe to your friends, they'll be notified that you've joined FriendFeed. Share your own stuff with them by using the text box at the top of your feed.

If you're having any trouble, ask your questions in FriendFeed Feedback.

If all else fails, ask your friends by going here and then clicking "Post".

Can I choose who sees the things I share?

Anyone who is subscribed to you can see and comment on the things you share to your feed. You can designate your feed as either public or private, and you can change your preferences by clicking on "settings". If your FriendFeed is private, you approve every subscription request for your feed, and your stuff will not be visible to anyone other than your approved friends. If you choose to make your FriendFeed public, anyone can subscribe to you without requiring approval.

Even if you have a public feed, you can still share private direct messages with friends and groups. And you can create private groups as well, for sharing with specific people.

How do I find and subscribe to my friends' feeds?

We offer many ways to find your friends on FriendFeed. We show these options to you when you're first signing up on FriendFeed, but you can always access them by clicking on "Friends" in the green "Friends" box and then the "Find/invite friends" link.

You can find your friends by searching for their name or email address. We also offer some recommended friends—users who are popular among your existing friends on FriendFeed. Once you find someone on FriendFeed you'd like to subscribe to, go directly to their feed and click either "Subscribe" or "Request a subscription" (if they have a private feed).

You can also find and bulk-subscribe to friends who are already using FriendFeed by importing your contactsfrom other services, including Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, Yahoo! Mail and Hotmail.

How do I invite more friends to use FriendFeed?

Click on "Friends" in the green "Friends" box
Click the "Find/invite friends" link
Click "Email invitations"
Enter the emails of the people you want to invite. You can also include a personal message.
Click "Send invitations"

How do I connect FriendFeed with my Facebook account?: You can connect your Facebook account to your FriendFeed account by adding the FriendFeed Facebook application. You will be automatically subscribed to your Facebook friends who are already using FriendFeed, and your friends on the two services will continue to be kept in sync. The app will also put your FriendFeed on your Facebook profile and in your mini-feed.

How do I add a service to my FriendFeed?

FriendFeed can automatically pull in the things you've shared from over 50 services across the web, including Twitter and Flickr. To do so:

Click on the "settings" link in the top right corner
Click "add/edit" next to "Services"
Pick a service or expand the list to see all the services that FriendFeed supports
Clicking on any service will bring up the specific requirements FriendFeed needs (e.g., username, email address) in order to import your stuff from that service

Your stuff should show up in your FriendFeed almost immediately. If the service you want to add is not one of the ones we currently support, you can still add it as a "Blog" or "Custom RSS/Atom", as long as it has a per-user RSS or Atom feed.

What are subscription and invitation requests?: If someone invites you to join a group or they request a subscription to your private feed or group, you'll see a notification at the top of your feed. Clicking on the request will take you to a page where you can approve or ignore the request.

What are groups?

How do I find groups to join?

Click on "Groups" in the orange "Groups" box and then the "Find groups" link.

You can find public groups on a certain topic by searching for the name. We also offer some groups that are popular among your FriendFeed friends and among all FriendFeed users. Once you find a group you'd like to subscribe to, navigate directly to that feed and click "Subscribe".

How do I create my own groups?

Click on "Groups" in the orange "Groups" box
Click the "Create a group" link
Choose a name and username for your group
Decide whether you want your group to be private, public or "standard"
Once you've created your group, you can add a picture, description, and services, and invite others to join

What are friend lists?

Friend lists help you organize your subscriptions. For example, you can create one for the friends you're subscribed to, and one for the interesting bloggers you follow, so you can see their updates separately.

By default, we've created three Friend lists for you (Personal, Professional, and Favorites), but you can change their names, delete these and create new ones.

Using FriendFeed

How do I post something on FriendFeed?: Just start typing your message in the text box and click the "Post" button. You can also add photos to your post. By default, your message gets posted to your feed, but you can post your message somewhere else by removing "My feed" and typing the name of a different feed in the "To:" box. You can even post the same message to your feed and any other feed or group you're subscribed to at the same time.

Can I post something directly from a web page that I'm viewing?: Add the FriendFeed bookmarklet to your browser toolbar and you'll be able to share any web page to your FriendFeed with just a couple of clicks. You can even attach thumbnails of images from the pages you share, and choose whether you want to share something to your main feed, or directly to one of your groups.

How do I reshare something?

You can reshare any item in FriendFeed—including your own entries—by clicking on the "Share" link beneath that entry. Doing so pulls up a dialog box that looks similar to the FriendFeed bookmarklet. You can edit the text of the entry, and choose whether you want to share something to your main feed, or directly to one of your groups.

From this dialog, you can also access the permalink and shortened URL for the entry. You can also copy the embed code into your website to display a realtime view of comments and likes.

There are also links at the bottom of the dialog so you can share this entry directly to another one of your services, such as Digg or del.icio.us.

How do I edit an entry after I've posted it?: Click on the "Edit" dropdown beneath the entry. You can edit an entry's title by selecting "Edit this entry". If there are comments on your entry, you can also delete specific comments by selecting "Moderate comments".

How do I send a direct message?

Just start typing the name in the "To:" box. You can send direct messages to multiple people at the same time. Everyone in the "To" box will be able to see and comment on that entry. Make sure you've deleted "My feed" in the "To:" box to ensure that a direct message is sent only to the intended recipients.

You can also direct message a user by hovering over their name in FriendFeed and clicking on the "Direct message" link that appears on the bottom right corner of their profile card. Right now, you can only send direct messages to people who are subscribed to you. If someone is not subscribed to you, this link will not appear on the card.

How do I delete some of my entries?

If you just want to delete one of your entries, click on the "Edit" dropdown beneath the entry and select the "Delete this entry" option. After an entry is deleted, an "Undo" link will appear until the page is refreshed.

To remove all the entries from a particular service:

Click on the "settings" link in the top right corner
Click "add/edit" next to "Services"
Select the service you want to delete from the list of "My Services"
Click the "Remove account" button
Check off the "Also delete imported entries" checkbox and click the "Remove" button

How do I publish entries from my feed to other sites like Twitter and Facebook?

Whenever you're posting a message or a link using the text box at the top of your feed, there is a check box to "Cc:" Twitter. If you check this option, you will be asked to log in to your Twitter account. After that, you can choose on a per-post level to have your post show up on both your FriendFeed and your Twitter accounts.

You can also configure additional options for publishing to Twitter—such as also publishing your comments or updates from other services automatically.

For Facebook, you can add the FriendFeed Facebook application. The app will put your FriendFeed on your Facebook profile and in your mini-feed. You will also be automatically subscribed to your Facebook friends who are already using FriendFeed, and your friends on the two services will continue to be kept in sync.

What are the options for the different kinds of feeds that I can create?

A group is just another feed, but multiple people can contribute to its contents. When creating a new group, you can choose between having a private group, a public group, or a standard feed.

A private group can be ideal for private sharing among collaborators, such as coworkers or a family planning a trip. You can also use these types of feeds for things you're following that you don't want displayed publicly in your list of subscriptions, such as an RSS feed of Amazon.com deal alerts. Private group feeds also don't show up in any public searches.

In public groups, anyone can post messages or comment. They show up in public searches and they're ideal for topics that you want to discuss with anyone, such as basketball or politics. They're also great for events, such as Macworld Keynotes.

Standard feeds are just like other public feeds in FriendFeed, except they can have multiple authors. They're publicly searchable. An organization can use them to publish their stories or press releases, and a user can create one that's about a specific topic that they don't necessarily want to flood their main feed's subscribers with.

Viewing

How do I search for something on FriendFeed?

Just type your search query in the search box at the top of the page and click the "Search" button. By default, we search over the contents of posts from the feed you're viewing (for example, if you're viewing the feed of a group you're subscribed to and you conduct a search, we will search over all the entries in that group by default).

A dropdown of options including "Search my friends" and "Search everybody" will also appear as you type your search query, and you can use these to search over posts from you and your friends, or from all FriendFeed users.

To get to advanced search, click on the "Search" button without anything in the text box, or on the "Advanced" link once you've done a search.

What are these entries that I'm seeing from people that I'm not subscribed to?: We wanted to make it easy for you to see the entries that your friends have commented on and liked. So we show these friend-of-a-friend (FOAF) entries, and indicate in the parentheses why you're seeing it in your feed. This is also a fun way to discover interesting new content and people. If you don't like seeing stuff from your friends' friends, you can easily hide these kind of entries.

How do I hide some items?

You can hide any item in FriendFeed by clicking on the "Hide" link beneath that entry.

Once an entry has been hidden, there will be a link to "hide other items like this one." Click this link and you will be presented with additional hiding options, depending on the type of item you wanted to hide. Just make sure to do this from the specific type of entry you want to hide. For example, if you only want to hide the friend-of-a-friend entries from some of your friends, make sure to follow the above steps on one of those entries.

You can view your hidden entries by scrolling to the bottom of your FriendFeed and clicking the "Show hidden entries" link.

Can I control who is allowed to send me a direct message?: Right now, only people you are subscribed to can send you a direct message.

Can I block a user?

You can block a user by visiting their feed and clicking the "Block" link. After you block another user, you won't see any of their posts or comments on FriendFeed, and they won't see any of your posts. However, they will still be able to see comments that you make on other people's posts and, if your feed is public, they could still read it if they are logged out.

To unblock someone you've already blocked, visit their feed and click on the "Unblock" link. After unblocking a user, you will again be able to view each other's posts and comments, including posts and comments made in the past.

How do I subscribe to just someone's comments and likes?: In addition to, or instead of, subscribing to a user's feed, you can also subscribe to their comments and likes separately. From the user's feed, there are links to their comments and their likes near the top right corner, and you can subscribe to comments and/or likes from those pages.

How do I stop the real-time updates?: Click on the circular pause icon at the top of your feed. This permanently turns off the updating for that page—even if you log out and log back in—until you press the play icon. In the meantime, you can still see updates by refreshing the page.

Customizing

Can I get notifications when there are updates to my feed?

Yes! We've got notifications via email, IM and/or a downloadable notifier.

To configure your notification options for any feed or friend list, click on the "Email/IM" dropdown in the colored bar at the top of the feed. Click "view all" to access all your notification options for FriendFeed.

You can also access all your notification options by clicking on "settings" and then "notifications". From this page, you can choose how and when you get notified, such as when there's a new comment on one of your posts or when there are new posts in one of your friend lists. You can even get notified in multiple ways for the same thing.

To stop all notifications, click the "stop all notifications" link at the bottom of the page.

How do I create a new friend list?

Click on "Friends" in the green "Friends" box
Click the "New friend list" link
Name your friend list. You can add friends and groups to it right away.

How do I add friends or groups to a friend list?

You can do so in two ways:

Go to either the friend or group's feed and click the "edit" link in the blue bar. Select from the available friends lists or create a new list. You can add friends and groups to multiple friends lists. If you uncheck "Home feed", updates from that friend or group will no longer show up in your main FriendFeed view and you will have to click on a friend list to seem them.
Click on the friend list itself in the green "Feeds" box and then click on the "Add/remove friends" link on the green bar. This lets you add friends and groups in bulk.

How do I designate which feeds show up in my Groups box?: When you hover over the top right corner of the orange bar in your "Groups" box, a "prefs" link shows up. Click on that to choose the groups you'd like to see. You can select from the groups that you have posting privileges to (the groups where you don't have posting rights are treated as subscriptions, and they're listed under your "Subscriptions"). By default, we show the groups you interact with most frequently.

How do I embed my FriendFeed into my blog?: If your feed is public, you can use our blog widget to embed your FriendFeed in your homepage or blog. We also have a lot of other widgets for your site, such as a chiclet to link your site's visitors to your FriendFeed, and a "Share on FriendFeed" link to give your readers an easy way to share content from your site to their FriendFeed.

Is there a mobile version of FriendFeed?: You can read and post to your FriendFeed via an iPhone-optimized web interface. There is also the FFtogo application, built using our API.

How else can I access FriendFeed?: You can view your FriendFeed in your iGoogle homepage, in Facebook with our Facebook application, or in a feed reader. Our Atom feed contains all comments, likes, and thumbnails, as well as detailed Media RSStags so you can get as good of a FriendFeed experience in your feed reader as you do on the FriendFeed site.

What's the best way to report a bug or send feedback to FriendFeed?

If you're experiencing an issue or want to let us know about something that you'd like to see on FriendFeed, try the FriendFeed Feedback room. You can search to see if others have experienced the same thing, or share your thoughts with us and other FriendFeed users.

How do I stop getting emails from FriendFeed?: You can update your email preferences from "settings". You can also unsubscribe from all email from FriendFeed.

What are the <link> tags that the Bookmarklet supports?

The bookmarklet currently supports two <link> tags:

How can I add my site to FriendFeed's list of supported services?

We periodically add new services based on user requests, traffic estimates, and technical difficulty. You cansuggest your site to help us prioritize what sites we add in the future.

Until it's added, per-user RSS feeds can be added as generic blogs, or items can be posted using theFriendFeed API.

How can I make photos and other media in my RSS feed show up on FriendFeed?

FriendFeed has limited support for importing Media RSS images. Please make sure the height and width of your media:thumbnails are set. If an appropriately sized image is present, it will be displayed.

Podcasts will appear on FriendFeed if an mp3 is referenced in either a media enclosure or a Media RSS element.

Where did my rooms go?

What happened to all the website icons?

There are now profile pictures on every entry, to keep the look of FriendFeed consistent, and to help keep the focus on what’s being shared and who’s doing the sharing. Entries that were pulled in automatically from other services still have a link to that service just after the timestamp. From a user’s feed or hover profile card, you can see the sites that the user automatically shares from.

What are the different feed options?

With feeds, there are no more rooms to join. You can subscribe to the public ones, or put them in a friend list, or just visit them to read the posts.

When creating a new feed, you can choose between having a private group, a standard feed, or a public group. These options replicate the old options for rooms, when you could make a public, semi-public, or private room. All the management capabilities remain unchanged.

We also display your friends lists in the Filters box.

How do I send a direct message?

Just start typing the name in the “To:” box. You can send direct messages to multiple people at the same time, and you can even post the same thing to your feed or any other feed. Everyone in the “To” box will be able to see and comment on that entry. Make sure you’ve deleted “My feed” in the “To” box to ensure that a direct message is sent only to the intended recipients. When you have new messages or comments on your direct messages, the new message count will be bolded in your Filters box.

Can I control who is allowed to send me a direct message?

Right now, only people who are subscribed to you can send you a direct message. If you’ve blocked someone, they will not be able to send you a direct message. We’re planning on adding more options and this is an area we’re still actively working to improve. Let us know your feedback here.

What keyboard shortcuts are available?

How do I find the permalink for an entry?

Click on the timestamp (even we can’t remember how to find the permalink sometimes).

Where are the imaginary friends?

You'll continue to get updates from the imaginary friends that you've created in the existinghttp://friendfeed.com site. To create a new one on the beta site, just "Create a feed". To keep your imaginary friend private, you want to select the "Private group" option. You can also make your imaginary friend visible to others if you create it as a "Standard feed". We have some plans for improving the imaginary friends feature, so it's very likely that they will change from the way they've been working in FriendFeed thus far.

How do I stop the real-time updates?

You can stop the real-time updating by clicking on the circular pause icon at the top of your feed. This permanently turns off the updating—even if you log out and log back in—until you press the play icon. In the meantime, you can still see updates by refreshing the page. There is a separate pause option for your home feed and any of your filters.

How will this affect the API and embeddable widgets?

The now web just got more interesting …

Friendfeed now has a more intuitive UI. Lists became filters. Direct messages were introduced …The core concepts have evolved.

The most interesting thing is the real-time update. This will probably be copied by Twitter.

Homework project: open Twitter and new friendfeed next to each other. Compare how they act. Twitter feels old and dead.

Its pretty obvious that most folks (assume knowledge worker) are still using the web for information. Dawn Foster’s notes published as Beyond Aggregation — Finding the Web’s Best Content at SXSW show how lots of Information Technology Knowledge workers are using the new feeding and streaming tools. Most folks while already using these tools for more than information think they are still doing information activities. The folks are lucky to be the first generation of Knowledge Traders. The new wealth is going to be real knowledge. Information is too slow in the Information Economy. What is driving this New Information Economy is a need for efficiencies. Aggregation tools helped manage the Web 2.0 information drama very well but FriendFeed probably has a better chance at making Feeds mainstream than Google Reader. Feeds haven’t delivered to consumer but have succeeded with geeks who fortunately build most information systems today. This means there are feeds everywhere. Feeds are real time like activity streams feeds. Most people’s creative activities going forward will probably originate from a feed they were reading on a service like FriendFeed. Most people’s activities going forwards will begin and live forever on activity streams and feeds. This activities are the new work. This activities will probably include all the common activities that we see in organizations today. What happens after Feeds and Aggregation. Rapid Info-consumption and sharing? This was another full session with people packed into the aisles.

Louis: limit sources to those things that are highly relevant. Uses Google Reader as a starting point. Read fast, share fast, decide fast. Know where it goes when you share it & engage there, too. Louis beats many of the top tech blogs with startup knowledge using these techniques.

Gabe: Techmeme is powered mostly by automation to find the top tech stories. Relies mostly on links to determine newsworthiness. It also looks for clusters of news on the same topic. Helps to surface most of the good news, but he recently introduced an editing process into the mix to add / remove headline.

Melanie: AideRSS focuses on social interactions to determine the best content (links, bookmarks, comments, Twitter, etc.). Best posts show the top articles. New beta product will be more focused on content discovery.

Micah: Start with trusted sources. Read the posts plus the links. Includes Lijit to aggregate these sources. Focused on trust relationships to drill down until you find the content you need.

Marshall: “How to find the weirdest stuff on the Internet” Used Delicious, PostRank, Yahoo Pipes, and Feedburner to find the weirdest stuff. Delicious to find the content, PostRank to find the best, yahoo Pipes to splice filtered content together, and Feedburner to give people a feed of the content.

Micah: For those looking to be found online. No matter how good you are, if you don’t interact with people, no one will find you.Many products take RSS, filter it, find the interesting content, and make it easier to find. Look for the products that have a human element & are not just algorithmic (Google vs. Delicious).

Melanie: Even for the tools, those are built by people and each one does something a little different & you need multiple tools to solve a problem, so you can’t take the human side out of the equation. It’s more important to find what people are actually reading and bookmarking vs. what they are recommending.

Louis: Follows other people’s Google Reader shares. Uses FriendFreed to put people in specific lists to find the best of the day within a specific list. Finds new information that he didn’t have before.

These techniques work best for tech, politics and a few others. It only works when people link to each other, comment, etc.

Gabe: This is why he hasn’t launched any new sites for a while. The data just doesn’t exist to do a Techmeme for many other topics. He might tackle something in a more traditional business / economic / finance area, but these topics alone are too small and aggregated might be too broad, so he’s looking for the right mix.

Louis: MacBlips has a family of sites with tech and a few other topics branching out past tech / politics.

Melanie: Disagrees that it doesn’t exist outside the tech space. It’s smaller and different, but it’s still there. Religions, knitters, etc. They are harder to find.

Micah: Launching content networks grouping like-minded bloggers to aggregate content (Security Bloggers Network). There are ways to utilize the tools outside of technology bloggers. We’re too close to the technology to see what is outside of our world. Does not think that you can automate recommendations. We take recommendations from actual people that we trust.

Marshall: He creates elaborate systems to find the lists of top blogs in a topic, but sometimes forgets to just Google it to see what lists other people have created.

Melanie: The way people think and search and make lists is on a personal trust basis. Be able to scan information to find the trusted sources.

Louis: What is your goal for finding information? Do you want to be first? Find new content? Find interesting things to read? Your methods will differ depending on your goals.

Micah: How do you find the next meme. FriendFeed is a river of information. You should try to find a new blog every day to find something new. Each one should drive you deeper into new things.

Melanie: Many of us are using Twitter more to get information at the expense of our RSS readers.

Louis: People are live tweeting (it’s easier) rather than writing blog posts.

Marshall: Twitter real-time search in Google (Greasemonkey script). He also builds custom search engines to search only within a defined list of sources. He also uses a FF plugin that allows him to get a grid of places to search.

Louis: Don’t be afraid to unsubscribe and prune content.

Marshall: Prefers to oversubscribe and prioritize. Never unsubscribes, just moves things lower in priority.

Secrets

Gabe: Information overload is a problem, but if you want an audience, they don’t always have the information overload problem. You have the problem, but your readers want interesting stuff.

Louis: FriendFeed best of day (I missed part of this)

Marshall: Looking at the bookmarking history and finding the people who bookmarked them first to identify some key people who are the first people to disover content, and subscribe to them.

Melanie: Ping her to get a beta code for the new PostRank feature.

Micah: Close to releasing a way to score individuals based on influence and connections. It should be released in the next 30 days.

What is FriendFeed?

FriendFeed is a service for people to keep up-to-date on the web pages, photos, videos and music that their friends and family are sharing. It offers a unique way to discover and discuss information among friends.

The goal of FriendFeed is to make content on the Web more relevant and useful for you by using your existing social network as a tool for discovering interesting information. You get a customized feed made up of the content that your friends shared - from news articles to family photos to interesting links and videos. And your friends get their customized feeds, full of the cool stuff that you've shared.

Why should I use FriendFeed?

It's open: FriendFeed automatically imports shared stuff from sites across the web, making all the sites you already use a little more social.

It's flexible: FriendFeed requires as much effort as you want to put in. You can use it just as a way to see what your friends are up to - browsing and reading the stuff they share, or you can actively share your own items and leave comments and have discussions with your friends. There are also lots of ways to access and display your FriendFeed.

And it's easy to get started: There's nothing to install, and you can share stuff on your feed as soon as you sign up. Light-weight conversations naturally sprout up around shared items and you can even get introduced to interesting news from friends of your friends.

How does FriendFeed work?

FriendFeed aggregates all of your activity from the sites you choose using web crawling technologies similar to those used by search engines. For most sites, all you need to provide FriendFeed is your username, and the FriendFeed crawler will automatically find and broadcast all of your public activity on that site. For other sites, or for services that contain private data and require special forms of authentication, FriendFeed takes advantage of the APIs provided by those sites to collect your activity.

Friend lists enable you to organize your friends into groups. With friend lists, you can get updates from your family separately from your coworkers, or you can follow an acquaintance in a list without having their shared stuff take up space in your home feed.

Create a friend list with the "New list" link on the right hand side of your home feed.

How do add or remove people from friend lists?: You can add or remove people from friend list by visiting the friend list page. Click "Add/remove friends" at the top of the page.

How do I add rooms to friend lists?: To add a room to a friend lists, visit the room, and click the "add/edit" link next to the "Friend lists" label at the top of the page.

How do I customize which rooms show up on the right hand side of the page?: To customize which rooms show up at the top of the list, click the "prefs" link at the bottom of the list. The rooms you check will always appear at the top of the list. The remaining rooms will be sorted by recent activity.

Can others see my imaginary friends?: Nope, your real contacts can't see who your imaginary friends are, or what they're posting.

Can I search for rooms?: Yes, you can search for rooms and see a list of popular ones on the Room Search page.

How do I delete a room I've created?: Just go to the room that you no longer want and click the "Un-join" this room link.

How do I add a service to my FriendFeed?

FriendFeed can automatically aggregate your activity from over 40 services. To do so:

Click on the "Me" link on the left side of the page
Click "Edit/add services" tab
Pick a service or expand the list to see all the services that FriendFeed supports
Clicking on any service will bring up the specific requirements FriendFeed needs (e.g., username, email address) in order to import your stuff from that service

Your stuff should show up in your FriendFeed almost immediately. If the service you want to add is not one of the ones we currently support, you can still add it as a "Blog", as long as it has a per-user RSS or Atom feed.

Can I choose who sees my feed? Where else will my feed show up?

You have complete control over who sees your feed. Your FriendFeed is either public or private, and you can change your preferences in your Account page. If your FriendFeed is private, you approve every subscription request for your feed, and your stuff will not be visible to anyone other than your approved friends. If you choose to make your FriendFeed public, anyone can subscribe to you without requiring approval, and your stuff will show up on the FriendFeed homepage.

What are rooms?

A room is like a mini FriendFeed for a particular subject or group of people. Everyone in your room can share stuff with each other and leave comments that only other people in your room can see. When creating a room, you decide whether to make it public, where anyone can join, or private, where you have to invite or approve each member. You can even have a room with a view by selecting "Show this room's content in my feed" -- this lets you view everything from your rooms in your feed as well, instead of just in the rooms themselves.

You can access all the rooms you're a member or owner of by clicking on the "rooms" tab. FriendFeed also displays your room memberships along with your friend subscriptions. There's no limit to the number of rooms you can join or create. As a room owner, you can manage the room's settings and membership, and invite new people to your room, even if they're not FriendFeed users yet. And when you use the FriendFeed bookmarklet to share anything from the web, you can also specify whether to share it on your feed, or just in a particular room.

Can I keep up-to-date on friends who don't use FriendFeed?

Yes, you can use our "imaginary friends" feature to see what your friends are sharing on some services, even if they aren't FriendFeed users themselves. For example, if you know your friend's Flickr username, you can create an imaginary friend with that Flickr account, and every time your friend publishes a photo to a public album, you'll see it as an entry in your feed.

You can only use FriendFeed's imaginary friends feature to see the public information your friends share.

Can I keep up-to-date on friends who don't use FriendFeed?

You can only use FriendFeed's imaginary friends feature to see the public information your friends share.

Does FriendFeed work with Facebook?: Yes, FriendFeed works with Facebook. You can connect your Facebook account to your FriendFeed account by adding the FriendFeed Facebook application. Your friends will automatically be kept in sync, and you can put your FriendFeed on your profile and in your Facebook mini-feed.

How else can I access FriendFeed?: You can view your FriendFeed in your iGoogle homepage or read it in a feed reader. Our Atom feed contains all comments, likes, and thumbnails, as well as detailed Media RSS tags so you can get as good of a FriendFeed experience in your feed reader as you do on the FriendFeed site. You can even get your entire FriendFeed - comments and all - delivered to your inbox. If your feed is public, you can also use our blog widget to embed your FriendFeed in your homepage or blog.

Common Problems using FriendFeed

Some common problems and solutions you might encounter while using FriendFeed.

I got a red exclamation point while trying to do something.

Sorry, there was a problem on the server.

Some common causes are:

The entry you are commenting, liking, expanding, etc has been deleted
You have been logged out from another window
There is a problem with your connection
You have installed a Greasemonkey script or add-on that's causing problems

Please refresh and try again. If you continue to have problems, please submit a bug.

I can't sign in to FriendFeed using my email address.

FriendFeed requires you to verify the email address you used to sign up. Assuming the email you typed in during sign-up was correct, you can look for an email from FriendFeed asking to verify your email address (sometimes these messages accidentally end up in spam folders). You can click a verification link from that email message, and you should be able to sign in using that email from now on.

You can also always sign in using your FriendFeed nickname (if this user's FriendFeed URL were http://friendfeed.com/caitlinroran, her nickname would be "caitlinroran"). Once signed in, go to the "Account" page and follow the steps to verify your email address.

My posts from another service aren't showing up in my FriendFeed. What's wrong?

Sometimes, certain services are slow to update. In particular, del.icio.us bookmarks have taken awhile to update because our crawler is throttled by them due to our higher traffic. Other times, the service itself might be down.

Usually, the best thing to do is to manually update your feeds:

Click on the "Me" link on the left side of the page
Click "Edit/add services" tab
Select the blog or service that's not updating from the list under "Your shared sites"
Click the "Refresh feed" link

You can also try removing and re-adding a blog or service by clicking on "Remove account" and then following the steps for adding a service to FriendFeed.

I am having trouble adding a particular service. It keeps saying "We could not find the given account."

First, make sure you have activity in the service you're trying to add. Users will see that error message if they try to add an empty feed. You should also make sure to check your profile on that specific service, in case it's set to "private" or something similar.

If you're experiencing this problem with Amazon wishlists, you may want to double-check that the email address you're using is actually the one associated with your wishlist. Visit the Amazon Wishlist page and make sure your wishlist shows up when doing a search using that email address.

If you're experiencing this problem with Flickr, make sure that your Flickr privacy settings are not set to hide your photos from third party sites. If you need to change this setting:

Click on "Your Account" from the "You" tab on the top of Flickr
Click on the "Privacy & Permissions" tab
Click on the "edit" link next to "Hide your profile from public searches"
Make sure that the box next to "Hide your photostream from searches on 3rd party sites that use the API?" is unchecked

Sometimes, there are also duplicated names on Flickr due to the Yahoo integration, which means that your username may not be what shows up at the end of your photostream URL. Alternatively, you may want to try using your display name or the email address associated with your Flickr account.

The bookmarklet is not showing the list of rooms I'm subscribed to.

First, make sure you are signed into FriendFeed. If you see your name at the top of this page, you are. If not, go sign in and try again.

If you're signed in, you may have third party cookies disabled, which are necessary for the FriendFeed bookmarklet to retrieve your list of rooms. To enable them in Firefox:

How can I add my site to FriendFeed's list of supported services?

We periodically add new services based on user requests, traffic estimates, and technical difficulty. You can suggest your site to help us prioritize what sites we add in the future.

Until it's added, per-user RSS feeds can be added as generic blogs, or items can be posted using the FriendFeed API.

How can I make photos and other media in my RSS feed show up on FriendFeed?

Podcasts will appear on FriendFeed if an mp3 is referenced in either a media enclosure or a Media RSS element.

Adding an RSS/Atom feed to FriendFeed

Can I add any RSS feed to FriendFeed?

Yes, you can add any RSS feed to your FriendFeed by adding it as a "Blog".

Click on the "Me" link on the left side of the page
Click "Edit/add services" tab
Click "Blog" link under "Blogging"
Enter the blog or feed URL

Items from that feed will show up in your FriendFeed as "You posted an entry on a blog". We're working on enabling more customization, such as for the icon.

Can I get email updates of my FriendFeed?: Yes. On your Account page, you have several email options. You can ask to be notified via email if there is activity on your feed and you haven't logged in for a while. You can even get your entire FriendFeed emailed to you, either daily or weekly.

How do I embed my FriendFeed into my blog?: If your feed is public, you can use our blog widget to embed your FriendFeed in your homepage or blog.

Is there a way that I can click on an entry or link and have it open in a new tab or window?: There is a checkbox for this preference on your Account page.

FriendFeed: Delete some of my entries?

How do I delete some of my entries?

If you just want to delete one of your entries, click the "More" link beneath that specific entry and select the "Delete this entry" option.

To remove an entire service:

On either your Account page or the "Me" tab of your FriendFeed, click on the "Edit/add" link that follows your list of services
Select the service you want to delete from the list of "Your shared sites"
Click the "Remove account" button

Removing a service does not automatically delete the items from that service that have already been imported into your FriendFeed. To remove all the items from that service, make sure to check the "Also delete imported entries" box before you confirm the account removal.

How can I turn off the "Friend of friend" entries?

Find a friend-of-a-friend (FOAF) entry on your FriendFeed
Click on the "Hide" link
Once the entry has been hidden, there will be a link to "See options for hiding entries like this"
Click this link and you will be presented with a few options, one of which is to hide all FOAF entries. You can even select the check box below this option to keep hiding FOAF entries "even if they have comments or likes".

If you only want to hide the FOAF entries from some of your friends, just make sure to follow the above steps on one of those friends' entries.

How do I hide some items?

You can hide any item in FriendFeed by clicking on the "Hide" link beneath that entry. Once an entry has been hidden, there will be a link to "See options for hiding entries like this". Click this link and you will be presented with additional hiding options, depending on the type of item you wanted to hide. You can view your hidden entries by scrolling to the bottom of your FriendFeed and clicking the "Show hidden entries" link.

Nice story about Friendfeed

It has been quite a week for us at FriendFeed. We launched a private beta version of our site to a handful of people on Monday, and we got a bunch of great press about the launch. Our ambitious beta testers have been using the site intensively, reporting tons of bugs and requesting tons of features in our discussion group. We really appreciate all of your feedback on the site, and we especially appreciate the thoughtful and detailed bug reports. Future FriendFeed users will thank you!

Last week we mainly focused on fixing technical issues people had connecting to services. We also made it easy to turn off emails from the site (100 "so-and-so subscribed to your FriendFeed" emails was a little much for some people), and we fixed a number of bugs in our Facebook application.

This week, we are focused on fixing the long list of bugs we didn't get to last week and letting in a large percentage of the people who have signed up on our waiting list. If you signed up for the site last week, you will probably get an invitation by Wednesday or so.

Our initial users were self-selected "early adopters," with a disproportionate number of Google employees due to our previous jobs. We were very curious what the most popular services would be at launch, and we were surprised to see Flickr take the top spot among our initial group of beta testers:

Being the top service doesn't mean you show up more in FriendFeed. It turns out Twitterers like to Twitter faster than Flickr users can produce photos. Here is the breakdown of events recorded into FriendFeed in the first week:

Twitter users have generated an astonishing 18.7 messages per user relative to 5.4 photos per Flickr user. We are looking forward to see how this distribution changes as we broaden our user base.

You can create a FriendFeed room for a particular subject or group of people. A room can be public (anyone can join) or private (require invitation/approval)

We launched the FriendFeed rooms in May, and the feature has been really popular. I just put together an overview video so people new to FriendFeed can learn about how rooms work and the interesting rooms they can create or join:

Sign up for FriendFeed, invite some friends, and get a customized feed made up of the content that your friends shared — from news articles to family photos to interesting links and videos. FriendFeed automatically imports shared stuff from sites across the web, so if your friend favorites a video on YouTube, you get a link and a thumbnail of the video in your feed. And if your friend likes a news story on Digg, you get a link in your feed. FriendFeed makes all the sites you already use a little more social.

It’s also fast and easy to start discussions around shared items. On FriendFeed, you and your friends contribute to a shared stream of information — information that you care about, because it's from the people that you care about.

Bloggers writing about FriendFeed have said that this service addresses the shortcomings of social media services which exclusively facilitate tracking of their own members' social media activities on that particular social media service, whereas FriendFeed provides the facility to track these activities (such as posting on blogs, Twitter and Flickr) across a broad range of different social networks.^[2] Some (but not all) bloggers are concerned about readers commenting on their posts inside FriendFeed instead of on their blogs, resulting in fewer page views for the blogger^[3].

For other sites, or for services that contain private data and require special forms of authentication, FriendFeed takes advantage of the APIs provided by those sites to collect your activity.

How do I add a service to my FriendFeed?

FriendFeed can automatically aggregate your activity from over 40 services. To do so:

Click on the "Me" link on the left side of the page
Click "Edit/add services" tab
Pick a service or expand the list to see all the services that FriendFeed supports
Clicking on any service will bring up the specific requirements FriendFeed needs (e.g., username, email address) in order to import your stuff from that service


Can I choose who sees my feed? Where else will my feed show up?: You have complete control over who sees your feed. Your FriendFeed is either public or private, and you can change your preferences in your Account page. If your FriendFeed is private, you approve every subscription request for your feed, and your stuff will not be visible to anyone other than your approved friends. If you choose to make your FriendFeed public, anyone can subscribe to you without requiring approval, and your stuff will show up on the FriendFeed homepage.

What are rooms?

Can I keep up-to-date on friends who don't use FriendFeed?

You can only use FriendFeed's imaginary friends feature to see the public information your friends share.

Does FriendFeed work with Facebook?: Yes, FriendFeed works with Facebook. You can connect your Facebook account to your FriendFeed account by adding the FriendFeed Facebook application. Your friends will automatically be kept in sync, and you can put your FriendFeed on your profile and in your Facebook mini-feed.

How else can I access FriendFeed?: You can view your FriendFeed in your iGoogle homepage or read it in a feed reader. Our Atom feed contains all comments, likes, and thumbnails, as well as detailed Media RSS tags so you can get as good of a FriendFeed experience in your feed reader as you do on the FriendFeed site. You can even get your entire FriendFeed - comments and all - delivered to your inbox. If your feed is public, you can also use our blog widget to embed your FriendFeed in your homepage or blog.

What's the best way to report a bug or send feedback to FriendFeed?

If your issue involves personal information, or you don't feel comfortable publishing your message in the room, contact us using our bugs form. If there's a service that you'd like to see supported in FriendFeed, let us know.

Finally, if you have any questions about our API, you can discuss them with us and other FriendFeed developers in the FriendFeed API developer forum.

I have a suggestion for a site to add to FriendFeed.: Great! Let us know using our suggestion form. We are always reviewing new sites to add, and we tend to add them in batches. However, we do require a site to have per-user RSS or Atom feeds in order for us to support it. If it does, you can always add it as a "Blog".

Can I add any RSS feed to FriendFeed?

Yes, you can add any RSS feed to your FriendFeed by adding it as a "Blog".

Click on the "Me" link on the left side of the page
Click "Edit/add services" tab
Click "Blog" link under "Blogging"
Enter the blog or feed URL

Items from that feed will show up in your FriendFeed as "You posted an entry on a blog". We're working on enabling more customization, such as for the icon.

Can I get email updates of my FriendFeed?: Yes. On your Account page, you have several email options. You can ask to be notified via email if there is activity on your feed and you haven't logged in for a while. You can even get your entire FriendFeed emailed to you, either daily or weekly.

How do I embed my FriendFeed into my blog?: If your feed is public, you can use our blog widget to embed your FriendFeed in your homepage or blog.

Is there a way that I can click on an entry or link and have it open in a new tab or window?: There is a checkbox for this preference on your Account page.

How do I delete some of my entries?

If you just want to delete one of your entries, click the "More" link beneath that specific entry and select the "Delete this entry" option.

To remove an entire service:

On either your Account page or the "Me" tab of your FriendFeed, click on the "Edit/add" link that follows your list of services
Select the service you want to delete from the list of "Your shared sites"
Click the "Remove account" button

How can I turn off the "Friend of friend" entries?

Find a friend-of-a-friend (FOAF) entry on your FriendFeed
Click on the "Hide" link
Once the entry has been hidden, there will be a link to "See options for hiding entries like this"
Click this link and you will be presented with a few options, one of which is to hide all FOAF entries. You can even select the check box below this option to keep hiding FOAF entries "even if they have comments or likes".

If you only want to hide the FOAF entries from some of your friends, just make sure to follow the above steps on one of those friends' entries.

Can I block a user?

What are friend lists?

Create a friend list with the "New list" link on the right hand side of your home feed.

How do add or remove people from friend lists?: You can add or remove people from friend list by visiting the friend list page. Click "Add/remove friends" at the top of the page.

How do I add rooms to friend lists?: To add a room to a friend lists, visit the room, and click the "add/edit" link next to the "Friend lists" label at the top of the page.

How do I customize which rooms show up on the right hand side of the page?: To customize which rooms show up at the top of the list, click the "prefs" link at the bottom of the list. The rooms you check will always appear at the top of the list. The remaining rooms will be sorted by recent activity.

Can others see my imaginary friends?: Nope, your real contacts can't see who your imaginary friends are, or what they're posting.

Can I search for rooms?: Unfortunately, there is currently no search function for rooms. But we're working on it!

How do I delete a room I've created?: Just go to the room that you no longer want and click the "Un-join" this room link.

How do I delete my account?: Sorry to hear that you no longer want to use FriendFeed. You can delete your account here: http://friendfeed.com/account/delete

What are the <link> tags that the Bookmarklet supports?

The bookmarklet currently supports two <link> tags:

<link rel="image_src" href="http://example.com/test.jpg" />

The referenced image will appear as a thumbnail. The user can replace or remove it.

<link rel="video_src" href="http://example.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=0000000" />

The referenced video will appear as an inline player, if the video site is supported. Currently supported inline sites are:

Seesmic

Hulu

CollegeHumor

ComedyCentral (The Daily Show, Colbert Nation, etc)

How can I add a link on my site to share content to FriendFeed?: You can add a "Share on FriendFeed" link or use the FriendFeed API, or contact us at bizdev@friendfeed.com to discuss a more integrated experience.

How can I add my site to FriendFeed's list of supported services?

We periodically add new services based on user requests, traffic estimates, and technical difficulty. You can suggest your site to help us prioritize what sites we add in the future.

Until it's added, per-user RSS feeds can be added as generic blogs, or items can be posted using the FriendFeed API.

How can I make photos and other media in my RSS feed show up on FriendFeed?

Podcasts will appear on FriendFeed if an mp3 is referenced in either a media enclosure or a Media RSS element.

I got a red exclamation point while trying to do something.

Sorry, there was a problem on the server.

Some common causes are:

The entry you are commenting, liking, expanding, etc has been deleted

You have been logged out from another window

There is a problem with your connection

You have installed a Greasemonkey script or add-on that's causing problems

Please refresh and try again. If you continue to have problems, please submit a bug.

I can't sign in to FriendFeed using my email address.

My posts from another service aren't showing up in my FriendFeed. What's wrong?

Usually, the best thing to do is to manually update your feeds:

Click on the "Me" link on the left side of the page

Click "Edit/add services" tab

Select the blog or service that's not updating from the list under "Your shared sites"

Click the "Refresh feed" link

You can also try removing and re-adding a blog or service by clicking on "Remove account" and then following the steps for adding a service to FriendFeed.

I am having trouble adding a particular service. It keeps saying "We could not find the given account."

If you're experiencing this problem with Flickr, make sure that your Flickr privacy settings are not set to hide your photos from third party sites. If you need to change this setting:

Click on "Your Account" from the "You" tab on the top of Flickr

Click on the "Privacy & Permissions" tab

Click on the "edit" link next to "Hide your profile from public searches"

Make sure that the box next to "Hide your photostream from searches on 3rd party sites that use the API?" is unchecked

The bookmarklet is not showing the list of rooms I'm subscribed to.

First, make sure you are signed into FriendFeed. If you see your name at the top of this page, you are. If not, go sign in and try again.

If you're signed in, you may have third party cookies disabled, which are necessary for the FriendFeed bookmarklet to retrieve your list of rooms. To enable them in Firefox:

Click on "Preferences" in the "Edit" menu.

Click on the "Privacy" tab

Make sure "Accept third-party-cookies" is checked:

If the rooms continue to not show up, you may wish to try signing out or deleting your cookies, and then logging back in.

We've made some improvements to our search functionality. Searching is now faster and more reliable, and we added a number of useful advanced search features. You can:

Search for words only in entry titles or in comments
[intitle:superbowl] - entries that mention "Superbowl" in the title

This is freaking awesome. Some things we still need:
1. We can't import Atom feeds these searches generate into rooms. That is a real problem which is limiting the room's usefulness to me and others.
2. We can't select date ranges. I want to see all items with Obama in the title on November 5, 2008, for instance, and I can't do that.
3. I would love to be able to search based on location that an item originated from (especially useful with Brightkite items).
4. I would like to search for items with multiple words, but that are combined. Like "techmeme rocks" -- I can't do that, or, at least, I haven't figured out how to do it.
5. Why can't we see a real-time view of searches?
6. I would like to have an embed code for my blog so I can easily copy and paste results onto my blog, or link to them or embed them into a widget on my blog. Linking is fairly easy, but embedding or copying is not. At least not for wordpress.com.
But, this is a HUGE move forward. Thank you so much!
